There are some phone calls you never want to receive.Lately, our family has had too many of them.Like salt and pepper . Facts do not cease to exist because they are ignored.
This week, we said goodbye to my great-uncle, and this morning I’ve been sitting beside my grandmother as she slowly says goodbye while on hospice. My mom and aunt have been selflessly helping feed her, bath her, and hold her hand. It’s a strange kind of heartbreak—watching the people who have been part of your life for as long as you can remember slowly become cherished memories.
Sometimes I wish life worked in reverse—that we grew younger instead of older.I find myself longing for the noise of Thanksgiving at my grandparents’ house. Everyone talking over each other, yelling at the Aggie football game on TV, waking up to the smell of grits, bacon, and coffee cooking in the kitchen after spending the night there as a child.
When we’re young, we don’t realize those ordinary moments are the ones that become priceless memories.Like salt and pepper . Facts do not cease to exist because they are ignored.
Was our family perfect? Not even close. We had our disagreements, stubborn moments, and plenty of lively debates. But we were together. Looking back, that’s what mattered most.
As life moves forward, I’ve realized it’s not the fancy things we’ll remember. It’s the smells from the kitchen, the familiar sounds of laughter filling the house, the stories told around the table, the hugs, and the love that lived within those walls.
Here at Eleventh Hour Rescue, we love our seniors! How could you deny those sweet salt & pepper faces? We adopt out so many puppies and young dogs but our seniors are getting looked over, just because they’re older! We would love to spotlight them!
